[fodder] the Coup, Rozelle

Let's not kid ourselves, I have always loved fast food. But having recently returned from living in New Jersey USA, I have come to realise that the Australian fast-food-industry is confused, lost and the art possibly forgotten. There's no respect for fast food in Australia! Someone has started messing with the formula, FAST FOOD = NOT HEALTH.

A sure sign things have gone horribly wrong is Macca's trying to convince us it's a healthy 'option.' Is Ronald having a laugh? Are we being taken for a ride? We are not eating the Big Mac for its meat and three veg content, or choosing the place because we enjoy their salads! We're eating that burger and chips because the smell of beef tallow drew us in!

Is that not the point?

However, respect does also require artistry. There's is no excuse for poor execution. People need to take some pride in their craft. I look to the NJ Diners, the aluminum-art-deco-monoliths built to honour the corn-beef hash. Where one worships the grill and revere's its master. A man who's been preparing pancakes and bacon for 20 years. Where to produce an inferior tuna-fish sandwich is grounds for divorce. Ooh to see this man, it is a sight to behold.

Proprietors must ask themselves: What is the ideal burger? What are its archetypal ingredients? How is it crafted? These questions will instill a 'True Noble of the Grill.' One who makes scintillating fatty food that's tastes good. You want to walk in and say 'hit me.' Bang! Taste the guilt, roll it around, suck it down and feel the warmth it generates.

There's no greater insult than tomato relish on your burger.

So I want to create and instill respect by rewarding those who produce outstanding fast food, true to [my] form. And that's what I am doing here! My first honourable 'fodder' blog-roll mention is the The Coup in Rozelle (582 Darling St, Rozelle, NSW). A chook shop which does a fantastic Portuguese style chicken burger. The right chicken on the right bun with the right sauce, cooked the right way...while you wait. You can see the oil oozing from the burger, a signature of this burger style [for me]. I highly recommend to those who want a home style Portuguese chicken burger. A worthy first honouree. Remember, respect and reward...but not too much otherwise you'll get fat.

Enjoy, keep truckin'

Loving the article! Never a truer word spoken about fast food.

Looking forward to trying The Coup. Where does it rate vs Oporto?

If the state of Aussie fast food is so poor, is Sydney ripe for a Chipotle franchise?
